Summary

Clontarf February 15th [“46?” is penciled in by an unknown person]

Hildebrand,

Before you receive this letter, you will have heard that Mr. Geoffrey Browne is going to stand for Mayo, either he or Mr. George Moore must give way to the others --- they must settle that between them --- I should think the one who decides on standing will be returned against the repeal candidate. ---I cannot believe that Mr. George Higgins will have the repeal interest --- Mr. McDonnell is more likely.---

This is the moment for Lynch to graft on any stocks that he has.--- tell him so.--- I have been asked for some plants of the American Catawba Grape[.] if let me know whether Lynch has any rooted plants he can give away --- if not, tell him to put down some cuttings of it in the warmest ------ house immediately --- I believe it is a good time of year for thicking vines --- & I know it is a good time for thicking Weeping Willow Cuttings, So I wish he would put down some by the water’s edge in the Luay Wood, opposite to my pleasure ground, & in my pleasure ground by the water’s edge near the little Round lawn --- the best size is about the thickness of the man’s wrist. If Lord Altamont does not like them, they can soon be cut down.--- I had a letter from Lord Altamont this morning dated “Cairo, January 21st “ he reached Cairo a fortnight sooner than he had expected, so I think he will be in England by the 1st of April --- but his arriving at Cairo so soon will prevent his hearing of Mr. Blake’s resignation until the Election is over, as he will have left Cairo for Petra before the letter about it can possibly arrive there.---

Let me know whether you have reason to think the Repealers will make a great stir in Mayo, and whether you think all, or nearly all the freeholders on the Westport estates will vote against the Repeal Candidate. ----

Yours,

Catherine Sligo
